Types of Medicare
Did you know there are different types of Medicare?

Everyone’s health is not one-size-fits-all and neither is Medicare. There are options to assist all different people in all
different walks of life.

The 4 basic types of Medicare (A, B, C, D) are:

Traditional Medicare

(generally covers about 80% of medical expenses):

Traditional Medicare plans are advantageous for individuals who can budget for a premium and don’t want to worry about co-pays on the back end.

You can also get supplemental coverage (at a monthly premium) to help cover the 20% of your responsibility under Medicare Part A and B

Total Insurance Plan

(typically no or low premiums, but will have co-pays):

Total Insurance Medicare plans are advantageous for individuals who want low premiums. They offer full coverage of benefits and are ideal for people who do not want to pay a premium up front and would rather pay small copays for services as they are received.  They also have a stop-loss, called the Maximum Out of Pocket limit to protect from the copays becoming too large.

Most Popular Plan: Medicare Advantage

When choosing a Medicare plan, a large number of recipients opt for Medicare Advantage, why?

That’s because Medicare Advantage not only covers everything in Part A and Part B (and oftentimes Part D), it also has added coverages like over-the-counter benefits (to include items like aspirin, bandages, and cold and flu medication), a fitness benefit to get free gym memberships, and more.

With Medicare Advantage there is a maximum out of pocket to protect you from catastrophic financial loss. Thankfully, over the years, the out-of-pocket maximum has become lower and lower. That means that if you are on Medicare Advantage for 3 or 4 years with good health, you will save much on premiums that one bad year doesn’t affect you very much at all.

First off, anybody and everyone over the age of 65 qualifies for Medicare.

Now you’re at what we call “the main fork in the road”.

This is when you decide if you want to stay with Traditional Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Prescription drug plan OR go to a Medicare Advantage and have it be your insurance package.

The options are there for you to choose.  And Iron Horse Financial is here to help you understand those options.

Medicare is also available for individuals on disability.

If you’ve drawn a Social Security/Disability check for 24 months then you automatically qualify for Medicare. Some conditions will qualify you sooner (eg. being blind will qualify you almost immediately).
